As you are about to see, 1954 went down in HMS Ganges history as a year without precedent throughout the period 1906 to 1976, namely its entire history - in short, more boys ran away from HMS Ganges in 1954 than at any other time and transcended the numbers returned by HMS St Vincent by a huge margin. All the artefacts on display have been donated by former trainees, instructors and staff, or their families. The Royal Naval Training Establishment Shotley (known within the Royal Navy as HMS Ganges) was established in southern Suffolk in 1905.
Whilst the developers of the Marina site have now completed the flats on the old Suffolk Lodge and the houses on the old Boatyard they are continuing further along King Edward VII Drive on what was known as the Grassy Knoll, now renamed Ganges Point.
